Transition Probability

Definition

Suppose the conditional probability of Xn+1 being in state j given that Xn is in state i is constant over time:

Pij=P(Xn+1=j∣Xn=i),for all n

Then Pij is called the one-step transition probability.

Interpretation

Transition probability Pij is the probability of transitioning from state i to state j in one time step.
